Lovarda Debrecen (private event) Ivani-Frankivszki (Ukraine)

We began our summer concerts with the opening concert of the ‘Simonyi Days’ programme at the County Hall. We would like to thank Gyula Papp and Dániel Emőd for allowing us to take part in this beautiful event which does so much to preserve Hungarian traditions. At the beginning of June we were happy to perform the pleasant duty of playing at the Márton Dorogi Town Cultural Centre in Püspökladány. Also this year, Judit Csuzda Kovács – who was instrumental in starting the musical careers of several of our players – received the Imre Csenki Prize for teaching. Our Big Band accompanied the celebrations with a short performance. On behalf of our orchestra we would like to warmly congratulate Jutka on her success. We appeared in the closing concert of the University Jazz Friends Circle. It was also a farewell concert for our former colleague Shara E. Pate, the E Flat Alto Saxophone player, who has returned home to the US. She played in our orchestra for a year while studying in Hungary. We remember with happiness the concerts where we shared the stage with our charming, delightful fellow musician. We hope we will be able to play together with Shara again. At the end of June we were in Miskolc at an event to accompany the Opera Festival. We entertained the large audience in the pleasant surroundings of the City Hall Square. In the middle of July we appeared in Debrecen in Kossuth Square, as part of the Summer Promenade programme. We then travelled to Balatonfüred where we performed at the events accompanying the Ana Ball. This year Debrecen was the programme’s guest of honour. The Saxophone Quartet, a smaller group made up of our Big Band members, complemented by Laci Sándor on drums, accompanied ‘fishers for hearts’ on the ‘Heartfisher’ pleasure boat with their pleasant music. In the evening on the stage set up near the pier we gave an extremely successful concert with the guest singer Myrtill Micheller, www.myrtill.hu. The event was so popular that we had to perform three encore numbers. Just like last year, we opened up the Hajdúszoboszló Dixieland Festival at the end of July. Playing on a large, technically well-equipped stage, in front of a sizeable audience full of bathers just leaving the thermal baths after closing time, we provided an appetiser for the festival. The closing event of the 40th Debrecen Flower Carnival was the prize giving in the Bartók Hall of the Arany Bika Hotel, where we provided a little carnival atmosphere with our band playing together with a Brazilian Samba-style group, who – incidentally – won first place in the Flower Carnival. We were extremely pleased that in the artistic group category, our foundation’s orchestra, together with the Valcer Dance Studio was awarded joint second place by the Jury. Two days later we appeared in Kossuth Square to open the Eötvös Cup International Volleyball event. This prestigious tournament boasted hundreds of competitors, some from overseas. Gastronomy was the flavour during the first weekend in September. At the Hajdúszoboszló Airport we opened the 10th Lamb Stew and Slambuc (pasta in a cauldron) Cooking Competition. It was a real pleasure to play music accompanied by such heavenly aromas. The combination of the flavours of the finest food wafting up from the cauldrons and the spectacle of the cooking and the music all served to entertain the visitors. László Daróczi
